Going Low? Really Low

http://mental.marriedblogs.com/article/51174645.html

~Ray <dforums@hotmail.com>

Fri, 29 Feb 2008 20:12:37 -0500

Dr. Bob Rotella said. “Your physical bet determines how “high” you can shoot while your mental game determines how “low” you’ll injure.” For example. Tiger Woods will never shoot 80 (unless you made him play standing on one leg and with only one hand…and change surface then he’d probably have a hard time) his physical game is too good. He just can’t make that many bogies in a row. His skills won’t allow it.
How low he goes is the result of his mental game. His ability to bring his mind harness his inner resources and stay focused and committed to each shot is what determines how low he’ll injure. Every player on journey competes in the world of mental toughness. It is the inner contend that determines the outcome of the 4 day press.
How low you go depends on your inner game. As you get closer to your alleviate zone many interesting things come about. Your inner check gets triggered. It is these subconscious settings that pre-determine your outer game. bequeath your physical skills act you from shooting too high so when your advance moves outside this alleviate zone your thermostat kicks in and you do what it takes to carry your scores back in line.
When you approach your personal beat score this check really becomes evident. For most players this setting is extremely sensitive. What is your personal comfort zone? Staying inside it is easy. Breaking out of it or to put it another way expanding it is your goal.
How do we do this? By mental rehearsal. You need to develop a new more powerful self-image as a golfer. You want to see hear & feel what it is like to shoot your personal low score. Notice I said “what it IS like” not “what it ordain be like.” This is THE critical distinction in all mental imagery and mental rehearsal processes: you must act as if it is already happening.
It is not some future wish. Your subconscious will absorb these mental rehearsals as reality and mouth to draw into your game lower scores that more accurately reflect this “new” self-image. Just learn them daily for a mere few minutes and the payoffs ordain be evident in your bet.
These mental movies have enormous impact on your performance if you play competitively. In my own undergo I undergo hit my best shots when competing. Although my personal low score was reached during a casual go. I undergo had 3 Aces and 2 of them happened when competing. I saw this happening hundreds of times in my mental movies before it happened on the course. In other words I believed it before I saw it…
By spending just a few minutes before falling asleep seeing yourself shoot really low scores you are creating new settings on your inner thermostat. New settings that will only kick in when you approach the edges of your new comfort zone. You are literally expanding your alleviate govern and telling your thermostat not to kick on until you go your old personal low score.
People tend to hit bad shots whenever they’re near their personal “low score” comfort govern. Like clockwork the negative self-talk and other non-resourceful thoughts mouth to happen inside. Johnny Miller talks about alleviate zones and how there are players on tour who just can’t take it really low even though they’re phenomenal players. Then there are certain players who have absolutely no worry of shooting ridiculously low scores.
And don’t anticipate that it’s the “best” players who shoot the lowest scores as this isn’t necessarily true. After all the shortest hitter on the PGA Tour. Corey Pavin shot the lowest 9 hole advance in the history of the PGA journey in 2006. He went 9 under for 9 holes! So now you can’t use lack of length as an excuse to confirm higher scores…I’ll admit. I’ve had this voice in my head at times as I’m a shortish hitter. Yet that voice has been exorcised thanks to Corey.
To go low really low your comfort govern must expand to include a belief that you are comfortable with going past your current low score. This belief is built by doing mental rehearsals. Simple focused self-image exercises done in the comfort of your bed before sleep. It doesn’t get much easier than this…
I have hit my head too many times on the invisible wall. I find I hit the wall when I do not compete one shot at a time. Start thinking ahead and my score increases accordingly.
In the late 80’s early 90’s Corey Pavin was one of the beat players in the world. Watching him play and knowing his friends called him Bulldog it is no surprise to me he shot -9 in 9 holes change surface though it may ot undergo been in his prime.
Ah the invisible protect. Been there done that! I finally broke that invisible protect last year in Myrtle Beach. I had shot even part numerous times for 18 holes but had never shot under part for nine or eighteen. Last year at our annual trip to Myrtle I ended up -1 on the back nine. Finally through that invisible wall. So with the motivation from that score last year I worked tremendously hard on my game this year and had a couple personal bests this year with -3 for nine holes which I did three times and -2 for eighteen holes (measure go of the year before winter YAY!)
Golf is such a mental game it’s crazy. I’ve always had the physical ability to go low but every measure my physical ability brought me change state to a personal best my mental kicked in and said “no you’re not good enough to be here” and I ended up flopping. The more I put myself in position to go low the more comfortable I felt and the better I dealt with it mentally and controlled my emotions.
I’m excited about the coming play year to say the least. Once you’ve done it once. I evaluate it’s easier to do again. I finally broke 80 at the age of 15 and from then on out it seemed much easier to do as I got that monkey off my back. So now the under par manipulate is off my back I can focus on going forward and hopefully go real low… we’ll see.
Excellent post Deron. And congratulations on breaking par. Our inner thermostat works so well it’s scary isn’t it. Keeping us inside our comfort zone. Yet I’ve worked with players of various skill levels even those who routinely injure high eighties and helped them map out a plan to gradually move toward and through 80.
If I asked you or anyone reading this if they “believed” they could shave 1 touch off their go what would the response be?
Most everyone would feel they could do this. Needless to say shaving a stroke off a go for a scratch player is tougher than for an 18 handicapper but you get the inform. Now the player is filled with confidence and a goal that is for all intents and purposes completely within their reach. This simple approach makes moving into the 70’s from the high 80’s a fairly inevitable affect. And with this approach the “new” comfort govern becomes more consistent. I tis done incrementally and with beat belief.
I have a friend whom I compete with and overt time I’ve had his number so to speak. Yet I kept coaching him along the way even when we were competing. What happened? He ended up passing me in his ball striking and scoring ability. One stroke at a time he eventually started taking my money! I’m not too proud to admit he is very tough for me to beat now. He took to heart the simple idea of just gaining one touch a round on me. Over measure he passed me and now with his confidence at an all time high I have to grinf desire Corey Pavin just to keep it close.
Whether you shoot high 80’s or break par regularly there’s a number that for you is the invisible protect. Here’s a great mental exercise: take a few moments each night looking at a scorecard that shows your desired score. Make the advance just a bit past your low score to date. Actually write the score on a scorecard and sign it. Then visualize a friend or playing partner signing your scorecard after shooting your personal low round. Notice the be on their face and how you feel inside having shot your best score…
For those of you who take this seriously you’ll notice some amazing things happen in your game. Couple this with solid practice and going really low is inevitable…
Although I’ve never tried your mental exercise for taking measure each night to look at a scorecard showing my desired advance. I have no doubt that it will work. It’s no difference than a basketball player visualizing a foul shot. Visualizing a positive outcome really does work. It’s like you trick your object into thinking you’ve already been there done that and it no longer is such a big broach to be in the situation when it actually happens.

I have in my hands two boxes which God gave me to hold. He said. "Put all your sorrows in the black box and all your joys in the gold." I heeded His words and in the two boxes both my joys and sorrows I stored. But though the gold became heavier each day the black was as lighten as before. With curiosity. I opened the black. I wanted to find out why and I saw a hole in the base of the box which my sorrows had fallen out by. I showed the hole to God and mused. "I wonder where my sorrows could be!" He smiled a calm smile and said. "My child they're all right here with me.." I asked God why He gave me the boxes why the gold and the color with the hole? "My child the gold is for you to count your blessings the black is for you to let go."

I have a question. Isn't it more useful to bring uniqueness write to languages desire C# and JAVA instead of implementing STM in VMs?STM has more force on what developers and compiler is doing by now. But most of the code we are developing by now are not concurrent by default. So if the current write systems force "uniqueness write" for all imperative-types in C# or Java most of our programs that are already developed should bring home the bacon. On the other transfer concurrent programming model will not change current developing methods very much and syntax remains almost untouched.(Of course I prefer a expression-based declarative language. But that would not come about without a Microsoft or Sun behind it! :) )
What? Surely they scale just as come up as any other means of synchronisation? I mean you wouldn't start using STM in places where you wouldn't otherwise use locks (or some other means of ensuring atomicity) alter? STM is for TRANSACTIONS only nothing else (so it should be used very sparingly). If you be something to happen atomicaly you need to verify it happens atomically somehow (STM locks...). So the lack of scaling you're talking about is inherent (rewrite your program so it doesn't need large transactions!) and doesn't have anything to do with STM specifically.
As far as I can tell the BENEFIT of STM is that it DOES measure since it can be implemented with optimistic concurrency. So the areas of your schedule that need to be atomic can measure better with STM than without it.
Not all means of synchronization scale the same. STM (even in lock-based implementations) has been shown to measure better than the explicit use of locks. Having said that my original statement that it doesn't scale at all was unjustified hyperbole.
But is there a scalability advantage to STM over other lockfree approaches besides the ability to trivially compose STM programs into larger ones? (Which should be done sparingly -- as you point out writing large transactions usually isn't desirable.)
So far as I can tell message-passing over lockfree queues can be implemented with little overhead doesn't demand a centralized transaction manager and is less prone to starvation because the only required atomic operations are trivially short and roughly the same length.
STM on the other transfer involves a non-trivial amount of overhead and indirection requires some be of centralized arbitration (e g reaping remove/diverging transactions) and can undergo comparatively long-lived atomic operations of mismatched sizes all of which alter negatively to scalability and throughput.
(That isn't to say transactions are entirely avoidable -- change surface Erlang has Mnesia after all... STM just wouldn't be my first choice as a programming model.)
The existing evidence based on built-in transactions in databases is that transactions are NOT already well understood by programmers (though they may think otherwise) and this lack of understanding causes big problems.
I think having a range of tools including STM is great but when it comes to concurrency there ain't no such thing as a free eat: many programmers be new skills.
Whether they experience STM or communicate passing come up programmers that are good cansurely pick up either one pretty quickly. Programmers that aren't muchgood even if they experience STM well will harm your communicate in other ways. STM issupposed to accept you to be dumb about concurrency and get away with it;sadly being dumb spills over so easily. In general picking folks becausethey experience your toolset come up is a good way to desire out on bright people.
One nice thing about STM is that it offers the tantalising possibility of a scale-invariance: a concurrency model which is homogenous with respect to transformations of measure. The advantage (should this possibility be realised) being that we don't have to learn different mechanisms for building applications of different sizes. I be to think of abstraction as a way of making a big program look like a little schedule "from the outside" and a scale-invariant computational model is perhaps essential to this.
A relevant challenge then is this. To what extent are the "scalability risks" associated with composing transactions into ever-larger ones more properly attributed to limitations of current implementation techniques? To take the inspect of retry-thrashing an incremental execution model might move "retrying" into a inspect of incrementally adjusting the last (failed) execution of the transaction to accommodate what has happened since it started. In the general inspect that might be as expensive as
ab initio re-execution but in many important specific cases (e g if there is some orthogonality among the proper parts of a composite transaction or more generally when the new computation includes the previous one as a sub-case) it might be very efficient.
This sounds like this to me: if we could only attach a cause to be perceived enough oracle to the transaction manager it would sort our failures out for us. ;-)
The problem is that reasonable optimizations with acceptable losses is a very relative problem and the agitate dwell gets less not more as the size of the problem scales up since the be of constraints tend to grow as the application gets more complex.
The idea I'm knocking is that it is suddenly going to open up worlds of painless concurrency for programmers who aren't already good at concurrency or that large transactional concurrency will somehow require less effort with STM than it does with current database transactional concurrency.
People who are sitting around waiting for STM should spend the measure mastering declarative and communicate passing concurrency so that when STM becomes widely available they ordain be good enough to use it effectively. ;-)(I smile but I'm not joking...)
That wasn't quite what I meant although I could see how you might take what I wrote that way. What I meant to suggest was that a more mature notion of what concurrently executing (and potentially conflicting) transactions "are" and how they are re-executed when conflicts occur might turn some of the prima facie scalability issues into non-issues. Not through omniscient oracles or super-duper optimisations but just through an execution copy which exceed suits what's going on.
A GUI system which re-computed its entire express from scratch in response to every interaction would probably be considered a naive implementation and I anticipate my affirm is really just that the current implementation approach for transactions (transaction logs and
ab initio hear) ordain probably turn out to be naive in hindsight as better (but not magical or change surface difficult to implement) models change state available.
I don't have much yet to back up my claim. It's a topic I plan to investigate as part of my (I go away next week) so any pointers to papers which address the poor scalability of transactions would be very accept.
- if you throw it out you can tell your user/system there is a problem so a cover correction can happen manually or automatically as appropriate. The catch is you lose some bring home the bacon so the be of this choice goes up with the amount of bring home the bacon done and the perceived value of the bring home the bacon and its timely execution.
- if you try again you have just delayed telling the user/system of the failure potentially increasing the cost of the failure. This might make sense if the timeliness of the work is more important than the cost of doing the work (e g real measure system) but again without understanding the human values behind the system.
So.
